When commanded “stand”, the dog should be on his all four legs. This is one of the very basic commands and should be taught only after the dog becomes master in “sit” and “down” commands and before the “stay” command.

Correct Time For Training

As the command is basic, it can be introduced early. The training sessions should be altered depending upon the moods of your little puppy. It is very important for your puppy to stay alert and listen to you during the training period. And for that, make sure he is in a playful mood. His tummy is full and he is not in any kind of pain.

Correct Location

As this command does not require any kind of movement from the dog, you can practice it any where and every where. You should take up the sessions inside as well as out side the house, not ignoring the safety of the dog.

When introducing any command for the first time, it is always advisable to take up the session in an isolated room or place where there are minimal distractions for you and your dog.

Step By Step Training

  1. Chose your dog’s favourite treat and call him by his name.
  2. When he arrives, ask him to sit without showing him the treat.
  3. Once seated, place the treat in your hand right in front of his nose.
  4. Gradually raise your hand and let him follow the movement. As he stands to take the treat, say a loud “stand” and give him the treat, praise him and pat him.
  5. Repeat the trick a number of times in a row.
  6. Now give a break for a little more than an hour. This time, ask the dog to stand before showing him the treat. If he obeys you, give him a nice pat and of course his treat. If he does not follow you, start again with step 2.
  7. Repeat the trick 4 to 5 times in a day for at least a week. And soon you will be getting the positive results.
  8. Gradually, reduce the number of treats. Praise him every time he obeys your command and treat him occasionally.
  9. Do not lose your temper. Keep your patience high as the dog will commit mistake.

  10.  After the seventh day of the training, if you are satisfied with the results, then you can introduce the next level of commands to the dog.

Essential Tips

  1. Do not impose more than one command on your dog at a given duration.
  2. Do not reinforce the command over the dog. If he is not obeying, fault is in your training.
